Driving Off The Cliff

Do the Republicans have a fricking political death wish?

This past week, the Republicans have put forth their initial proposed replacement (not repeal) of the Affordable Care Act (aka ObamaCare) titled the American Health Care Act, or AHCA.  The critics have called the AHCA a number of names including ObamaCare Lite and ObamaCare 2.0.  Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) stated:

“It’s a stinking pile of garbage. …It’s not a Republican, conservative bill. …One thing that I’ve maintained is that this bill was written with the help of the insurance companies, just like Obamacare. That’s why it looks so similar.“

From the articles that I’ve read so far, the AHCA is a tweak to the existing law, keeping the popular parts, dumping the unpopular parts (mostly), but keeping the government firmly in charge.  And by the way, it appears that you would be required to buy insurance by law.  Fix it

A far cry from the “repeal and replace” campaign promises of the Republican Party.  One begins to wonder why, and that brings back something that I wrote over a decade ago:

In case any of you didn’t know, a typical politician’s primary job is not to serve the people who elected him. His primary job is to get himself (or herself) elected or re-elected. Second is to reward all those contributors that gave $$ to help him get elected. Third is to get as many perks & benefits as he can while he is in office. Last on the list is the common person like you & I.

And here we go again – that vicious circle where We The People vote professional politicians into office based on their promises only to get screwed again.  To continue with the same post:

What happens is that anything that the politician has promised, said they would do, or otherwise look into during the campaign is promptly forgotten, and we, as the stupid idiots that we are, forget right along with them. That is, until the next time re-election comes up… Then it’s the “other party’s” fault for putting up roadblocks, vetoes, filibusters, yadda, yadda, yadda as to why they couldn’t fulfill their promises.

Does this dance routine sound familiar?  But the voters have woken up, and if the Republicans continue the politics as usual routine, they could find themselves in the same condition as the Democratic Party, and We The People might just find ourselves with a vengeful Democratic Congress back in power.

Here’s the problem – government entitlements like ObamaCare are rarely (never) repealed in their entirety.  There are certain groups that depend on the entitlements, and they are usually 1) very vocal about their support, 2) the Media makes it their “human interest story” about the government abusing their power (!) by taking away their civil rights (!!) to such a program, and 3) the Media putting the politicians trying to curb the entitlement through the 9th circle of Hell for even thinking to reduce government entitlements.

I’ve read somewhere that politicians, as a whole, are some of the most risk adverse people on the planet.  And it’s true – they will go to almost any length to avoid controversy that they cannot control or benefit from.  This is exactly what is happening here.  They want to keep the entitlements for the minority while trying to appease the majority with legal smoke and mirrors – a difficult balancing act that isn’t going to go too far with an awake electorate.

Arthur Schaper at Townhall.com has an interesting take on what should be done:

…repeal the whole damn Obamacare monstrosity, and let the free market make us healthy…

Don’t just repeal Obamacare, but repeal all the stupid rules pushed by government and corporate interests to enrich themselves while impoverishing everyone else. And about more policy-oriented discussions …

Let’s repeal the nasty notion that health care is a “right” which the government must provide. It’s not working in Canada, the United Kingdom, or Sweden. Bernie Sanders is a spoiled regressive from Vermont. He should try getting health care in Canada, where he can pull a number of hope that he wins a locale’s once-a-month lottery to see a family doctor. The animals get better care than human beings.

Don’t just repeal the Obamacare monster. Remove all the decades-old layers of government regulation. During World War II, FDR imposed age controls, so employers offered health insurance to compete for jobs. Now Americans expect third parties (including the government) to bear the burden)

Arbitrary caps on medical students, guild-system quotas on medical professionals, and arbitrary licensure laws are not helping. The government that wants to keep us healthy is making us sicker.

When Medicare arrived, more people ended up spending other people’s money for less healthcare.

Get rid of it.

The tort-lawyer lobby is kicking taxpayers’ butts. Time to discourage punitive damage awards? Restore the Common Law provisions which forced lawsuit losers to pay back the winning party’s attorney’s fees?

Sounds like a winner to me.  Hope the Republicans are listening…

Deadly Denial–Conclusion

This is the last post in a series that hopefully will show that sticking our collective heads in the sand is not conducive for not only our health, but the health of our country.

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” – Abraham Lincoln

“We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.” – Abraham Lincoln

“Don’t interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties.” – Abraham Lincoln

“No man is good enough to govern another man without the other’s consent.” – Abraham Lincoln

“The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases.” – Thomas Jefferson

“What country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that the people preserve the spirit of resistance?” – Thomas Jefferson

“The United States Constitution (c) 1791. All Rights Reserved” – Bumper Sticker

Who among the readers of this post believes that the government of the United States is fully functioning as mandated by the Constitution of the United States after events in our nation’s capital this past week?  How about over the past few years?  Not many, I would hope.

In what should have been a routine question concerning the rights of the People of the United States (specifically, the Fifth Amendment), the Attorney General of the United States waffled on the question if the President of the United States has the power to order the execution by a missile of an American Citizen on American soil.  While he later clarified his position, the question still remains – Does the President have the power to order the execution / assassination of an American Citizen anywhere in the world?  According to the Fifth Amendment, no. The Amendment reads:

“No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.”

“…nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law;”  In other words, the President does not have the authority of his office to order the killing of an American Citizen without due process.

Now I fully understand that Anwar al-Aulaqi, an American Citizen, was a high-ranking member of Al-Qaeda, the terrorist organization that is responsible for multiple attacks upon the citizens of many countries including the United States.  However, as an American Citizen, he had the rights of due process, which I believe were violated.  People reading this post may vehemently disagree with this statement, but are we a nation of laws, or we a nation of suggestions?  Stop and think about that for a little bit.

Between the unprecedented targeted killing of an American (al-Aulaqi) overseas and the confusing response by the Attorney General to what should have been a simple question, Senator Rand Paul launched into an almost 13-hour filibuster to the nomination of the next Director of the CIA.  The Attorney General clarified his position with a statement the next day – I personally am not satisfied with his response.

The above is only one, small chapter in the ever expanding mini-series depicting the misdeeds and missteps of our government.  Let’s take a brief look at one that is literally changing the lives of everyone in this country right now – the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), otherwise known as ObamaCare.

The goal is to reduce the number of people without health-care insurance, and thus reduce the overall health-care costs.  A noble cause, would you not agree?  However…

…It needs to be realized that ultimately, someone will have to pay for insuring the formerly uninsurable.  Those people are the working stiffs like you and I.  Already, the unintended consequences and costs are being revealed as I knew they would be.  Companies are cutting hours of their workers, or letting them go entirely.  Deductible limits are starting to climb higher for those people with company provided insurance, and some companies are considering dropping their insurance plans completely, paying the fine, and allowing their employees fend for themselves.  And I’m already seeing some of my taxes increase to cover this law, and I’m fully expecting the tax bill to rise every single year to cover the provisions of this law.

ObamaCare, no matter what your opinion is of it, is a bad law.  It solves nothing, impedes or restricts the freedoms of the People by forcing them into purchasing a product (health insurance) that they may not want, and to pay additional taxes & fees to support those who cannot.

And guess what – they’re not done yet.  The ObamaCare legislation is only a framework – over 25,000 pages of regulations have been written and I understand that no end is in sight as the various agencies write more and more regulations, clarifications, mandates, and who knows what else.

We cannot depend on the Supreme Court to protect us from bad law as passed by Congress and signed by the President.  Chief Justice Roberts had this to say in his decision to uphold ObamaCare:

“Members of this court are vested with the authority to interpret the law; we possess neither the expertise nor the prerogative to make policy judgments.  Those decisions are entrusted to our nation’s elected leaders, who can be thrown out of office if the people disagree with them. It is not our job to protect the people from the consequences of their political choices.”

Our government is growing by leaps and bounds every single day, and there is no end in sight that this ravenous beast will ever be satisfied until it collapses upon itself in fiscal insolvency and it’s own weight.

The conclusion that I’m coming to is that out government is broken, and needs to be fixed not by the politicians (who are showing themselves to being increasingly incompetent), but by the People.  A quote from Abraham Lincoln states:

“The people will save their government, if the government itself will allow them.” – Abraham Lincoln

Denying that We The People have the responsibility for electing the government that we have to represent us is self-destructive for both the citizens of this country and of the country itself.  We The People have no choice in the matter – Take back our government by electing people that are honorable, respect the Constitution and the People, and make the hard choices to bring this country back from the brink.   Otherwise, we will not longer have a country to be proud of nor to live in.  And that, my friends, is deadly, for where else in the world is there a place to live other than our great, declining nation?

Do You Trust Government Run Health Care?

Update at bottom –

As a follow-up to the previous post “Trust Government? HAH!“, let’s ask the question:  Do we really trust Government, i.e., the current Administration and Congress, with something as important and personal as our medical health?

Let’s see what our current President has to say about what he believes is the right course of action:

h/t to Indigo Red and many others (found it at Indigo’s place first)

Let’s now look at a news report from a main-stream media, ABC’s 20/20, of the Canadian system that is a single-payer system that treats people worse than pets:

h/t from Dee at Conservatism With Heart for this one.

But what happens in Canada and other countries with a single-payer government run health-care system can’t happen here, right?  Well, let’s take a look at what happened to cancer patients in Oregon:

and

So if you are too expensive to heal, the government will give you pain-killers and hemlock to ease you over into the next world?  Almost sounds like putting the sick and old folks on an ice flow and setting them adrift…  And then there is the other option which is part of the “shovel-ready” projects in the stimulus plan:

seniorshovelready Still trust the Administration and Congress to take care of you if you are sick?  Then you are truly drinking the Kool-Aide.  Consider the following short list summary of the House health-care bill from Brushfire of Freedom (you know, the one that is over a 1,000 pages and too long for our elected leaders to read?):

As the woman stated in the town hall with Specter and Sebelius noted in the previous post:

“I look at this health care plan and I see nothing that is about health or about care. What I see is a bureaucratic nightmare, Senator.”

A nightmare indeed. This government-run monstrosity needs to be killed before it ever sees the light of day.

Call & write your Congresscritter objecting to this insane proposal.

Update –

From Debbie at Right Truth comes a couple of more reviews of what is in store for us:

  • First, another summary of HR3200 from the Liberty Council.
  • Second, the “Plan B” just in case HR3200 doesn’t pass.  From The Weekly Standard.

Last, the text of HR3200 (aka ‘‘America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009’’) for your reference.

Note: If we can read and digest this bill, why can’t our Representatives, Senators, and President?  Isn’t that their job?
