Trust

For me, my trust is a precious thing.  I trust God.  I trust my wife.  I trust my parents.  I trust my closest friends.  I trust most of my family (every family has bad apples).  And I trust people (for the most part) to be civil in their dealings with me.  However…

I do not trust the Government…

“The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” – Fourth Amendment to The United States Constitution

The latest revelation that the National Security Agency (NSA) was essentially gathering data (records, in plain English) from phone companies and Internet providers without specific warrants or probable cause is just another chapter in the Book of the Government’s Dark Side.  We have yet another example of a governmental agency apparently violating the Rights of the People without regard to the Constitution.  And, oh by the way, the NSA is acting out of their mandated jurisdiction: The NSA is a cryptologic intelligence agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the collection and analysis of foreign communications and foreign signals intelligence, as well as protecting U.S. government communications and information systems.  They have no legal authority to gather ANY information on United States citizens.

So let’s move on to everyone’s favorite governmental agency – the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Did you ever notice that when you add “The” and “IRS” you get “Theirs”?

Even before the revelations of the past couple of months, mention the IRS and the word “audit” in the same sentence and chills would run down a person’s spine.  This is an agency that has unprecedented powers that violate the the Fourth Amendment because they can freeze your bank accounts without a warrant, and you, the accused must prove yourself innocent of any wrongdoing outside of a court of law.  The presumption of innocence is not within the mindset of the IRS.

Nor am I going to presume that this will change even with the pressure that the IRS is now undergoing in light of the apparent targeting of political groups which are opposed to the current Administration.  Bureaucracies are like that – huge, and slow to change direction.

But what is truly frightening is that the IRS will have increased power under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka, ObamaCare.  Under this law, the IRS has increased powers to evaluate, exempt, and confiscate collect fees taxes from those people who either have insurance that does not meet government “standards” or those who do not participate in the program.  Yes, Virginia, Uncle Sam exists, and will come to take your presents instead of leaving them under the tree…

Next on the list is the Department of Human and Health Services (HHS), the administrators of ObamaCare.

Besides the IRS, the HHS now has increased power over the health care insurance provided to the American people.  While I do not trust the insurance companies very much, at least they put into writing what your contract with them will provide.  With the HHS, those regulations are changing daily.  The bureaucrats within the HHS are writing and changing policies daily – 25,000+ pages and counting from what I understand.  Since this is a governmental, bureaucratic agency, good luck on finding out exactly what is covered or not, and if you need to appeal a decision, it won’t happen quickly.

Because of this, there are two issues that I have with the HHS and ObamaCare:

“The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” – Tenth Amendment to The United States Constitution

1)  No matter what the Supreme Court has ruled, I believe that ObamaCare violates the principle of  Tenth Amendment as the Government of the United States does not have the authority to mandate a citizen to carry insurance, which is essentially a contract with elements of risk & benefit.   This is not a governmental function.

2)  Like the IRS, the HHS has the power to grant or deny exemptions to the “tax” that is to be used for ObamaCare.  Another governmental agency now has a taxing authority upon the People, and also has the potential power to grant or deny treatment of an illness for an individual.

What the past several months have shown the American people (at least those that have been paying attention) is that our government is a large, bureaucratic, insatiable beast that has incredible power which has become increasingly politicized.  We have seen that opposition of an administration’s policies or goals will bring the full force of various governmental agencies down upon groups and/or individual predicated upon their beliefs or political views.

Stop and think for a second:  The Government has your financial data including bank accounts, investments & donations, knows what your Internet habits are, who you call, where you work, and has (or will have) your health information.  All in various databases.  In a matter of hours, the government (or some malicious bureaucratic political drone) can access this information, and use it to totally shut your life down for any reason.  All without a warrant.  All without recourse.  All without any of the protections of the Constitution or of the Bill of Rights.

Ergo, I have no reason to trust the Government.   So who should we trust?

I do not trust the Media, nor the Political Correctness that it promotes…

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

For far too long, the Media has been in the tank for the Liberal  / Political Correctness agenda, and yes, for the Democratic Party.  Yes, they appear to be waking up to the insanity of their positions in light of the recent AP phone records scandal, but I wonder how long that will last before they kiss and make up with the Administration.

I do not trust Congress…

Politicians are part of the problem.  Their focus has been getting (re)elected and gathering power for themselves, not defending the citizen’s rights as American citizens.  When the rights of citizens to bear arms under the Second Amendment are questioned, discussions of whether bloggers are covered under the free speech provision of the First Amendment are being debated, and making the illegal aliens undocumented workers legal without securing the borders of this country are being hotly considered, that point is driven forcefully home.  In Spades.

I do not trust my fellow man…yet…

Until the realization that our government does not have the best interests of the American People as their focus, and people are continuing to hold their hands out for the free cheese without understanding where it comes from, I will expect the voting majority to continue voting the way they are – Democratic, Liberal, and self-destructive.  It will only be when the personal pain becomes excruciating with enough of the providers and the freeloaders will the voting habits change.

This past week saw the 69th Anniversary of the D-Day landings.  The principles that American’s fought for in World War II were to bring freedom to the people of Europe from Nazi Germany, and to secure our freedoms at home.  I believe that those principles are not with us today, but are mere words instead of actions & beliefs.  A pity that the spirit of “The Greatest Generation” is not with us today.

“Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon a great crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.” – Dwight Eisenhower, pre-invasion speech, June 6, 1944
