Border Insecurity

“A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation.” – Ronald Reagan

My Great-Grandmother came to this country from her native Ireland fleeing the Great Potato Famine, and passed through Ellis Island.  At no time was it considered to sneak into the United States like a thief in the night.  People came to this country as a land of opportunity, a chance to start over.  Coming in illegally was not the way to start a new life.  This is the strength of the United States.

I take great insult to the Liberal’s implication that it is somehow the duty of the United States and its citizens to welcome people who cross our borders illegally, and that we should stop and examine our conscience.  The Liberal viewpoint also implies that to do otherwise is discriminatory.

What is right and legal is for immigrants to follow the due process of our laws, for then we know (at least in principle) that these people intend to be law-abiding.  It’s not discrimination, it’s self-preservation given the world today.  The violence in Arizona and Texas from Mexican gangs crossing the border illegally should give one pause the practicality of having an open border.

The Liberals dream of a Utopia that cannot exist in this world or in any other physical world.  It is not the fault of the immigrant that wants a better life for himself or his family.  It is the fault of the country he lives in for being repressive and closed to opportunities to better his lot in life.  The United States, realistically, cannot have unlimited immigration with open borders.  It is not practical nor is it sustainable.

Which is why I have such a hard time with the various Senators wanting to address our “broken” immigration system.  And yes, a “path to citizenship”, aka, amnesty, is on the agenda, and a bare mention of border security was made.

I understand fully the desire for people to better themselves, and to travel to places that offer them more opportunity. But I also understand respect for the law, and the immigrants that come to this country by sneaking across the border are not respecting our laws, our country, nor us. How does giving them a shot at citizenship while ignoring the laws of the land beneficial to this country? I have yet to hear of a logical, common-sense (!) explanation – all I hear are heartstrings and sob stories mixed with various platitudes.

As I see it, this issue is broken down into 3 parts – security of the border, people who enter illegally, and companies who employ those without citizenship or papers. Each of these issues must be dealt with independently of each other. This so-called “comprehensive legislation” with “triggers” being thrown around as a one-stop shopping solution is a bunch of weasel words designed to delay, obscure, confound, and otherwise mislead the citizenry from the issue of illegal immigration.

Here’s the kicker: There are already laws on the books that deal with these issues!! If our elected representatives would start worrying about this country instead of the next election & political power struggles, enforce the laws on the books by funding the appropriate agencies for manpower & equipment, there would be absolutely no need for new legislation. Illegals would be apprehended & deported, companies would be fined, and the border wouldn’t resemble Swiss cheese. And we, as citizens, would show our gratitude by voting to allow these wonderful representatives to keep their jobs.

The enforcement of these laws must be a priority of the Administration and the various law-enforcement agencies tasked with this job.  And that direction starts from the Office of the President.

No President can knowingly or unknowingly violate or ignore the laws of this country.  He is not king, nor does he write the laws.  It is his Constitutional duty that he has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of this country!!  The current laws state that illegal immigrants are to be arrested & deported.  By directing the law enforcement agencies of this country to ignore the laws of this country is illegal and potentially treasonous.

Our government is broken.  We, the People, have allowed this to happen by our inattentiveness and the assertion that “government is here to help.”  It may be too late to right the ship with the political parties in charge, but We The People must hold our elected leaders accountable no matter what political party is in power.  Otherwise, this nonsense will continue, and ruin this country to the point that it cannot be fixed.

Comments on the Week

Not any one topic, but comments on the past week’s events.

This past Monday was Tax Day, where all Patriots paid their fair share.  Except, of course, those who believe that they are Patriots regardless of what they pay in taxes.

President Obama’s effective tax rate was released to be a little over 18%, which was reduced from a larger rate by huge charitable contributions.  While I applaud his contributions to charity (although I do wonder who got the money), I was always under the impression that the Liberals (including the President) wanted the government to get their cut first to fund all their pet projects.

I guess not…

Also this past Monday, two bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon.  Three people were killed, many more maimed, and countless nightmares for years to come were created.  The terrorists (yes, I will use that word even though the PC among us won’t) were found with one killed and the other wounded.  It seems that the surviving terrorist is Muslim, a teenager, and a naturalized American citizen.  From the reports that I have read and heard, he is being questioned without being read his rights nor with an attorney present.

There are several comments that I have on this situation.

The first, as much as it pains me to say it, is that since this person is reputedly an American citizen, he now bears the rights and privileges of an American citizen.  This includes the right to counsel and the right not to incriminate himself.

The next is that this person must be questioned intensely to find out what & who he knows, and where he learned to make bombs.  Somehow, as he is a teenager, I find it hard to believe that he is the mastermind behind all of this.

Last is that I believe that this is the first of many attacks by terrorists of Muslim origin.  I know the Muslim faith is portrayed as a religion of peace, and many followers do not believe in these attacks, but actions throughout the world call into question that premise.  From a post in 2006:

Our media and politicians make excuses for Islamic terrorists, thinking that they are misunderstood and that we, as a country, need to understand why they hate us. That way, we can change so that they will “like us,” and will stop the killing.

Unfortunately, the killing has been going on for centuries, and will not stop anytime soon. A religion that goes ballistic over cartoons and cannot stand scrutiny is a religion that doesn’t need excuses, but accountability for it’s actions and justification for its existence. To state that it is a religion of peace and yet foment violence against non-believers is hypocritical in the extreme.

Whether we like it or not, I believe that the Islamic terrorists are going to do their damnest to make this into a religious war from whatever it can be called now. They will use the classic good vs. evil argument, an us-vs.-them conflict in the name of a jihad (religious war, for those of you in Rio Linda). They will plot, plan, and execute attacks that will cause large numbers of casualties. And the elitest idiots among us will wring their hands crying, “We don’t understand! We were talking!” Understand this, you Brie-eaters – there are people in the world that want to kill you just for the reason that you exist!! And we still seem to pursue the idiotic mantra of appeasement to those who wish nothing more than to destroy our country and subjugate us to their religion.

I look at Iran’s headlong rush to nuclear power & it’s stated goal of wiping Israel off the map, and it just adds an exclamation point to the above.

Gun control banning legislation was defeated this past week, although by the slimmest of margins.  The anti-gun anti-Second Amendment crowd is vowing to keep pushing for gun control banning legislation to be passed.

What is just absolutely insane is that these people are standing upon the bodies of children pushing this legislation in their names, and the proposed legislation would have done nothing to prevent the tragedy in the first place!!  Passing legislation that restricts the rights of the law abiding and does nothing to resolve the real problem is useless at best and un-Constitutional at worst.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, one of the health reform law’s chief authors, says he’s worried about a “huge train wreck coming down” if the Obama administration doesn’t improve its public outreach about the legislation.

We told Senator Baucus and the rest of the Demorats that this was a bad idea from the start.  Too bad they didn’t listen, and worse that we’re the ones that are going to be affected the most.

Last, a Texas fertilizer plant blew up last Wednesday, killing 15 people including 10 firefighters.  Our prayers go to their families.

Gun Control Is Not Crime Control

“The thing that we have to remember is that laws are only as good as our citizen’s willingness to obey them.  Now, law abiding citizens, do in fact, obey them.  Criminals don’t obey them.”  – John Boehner, Speaker of the House, April 12, 2013

Criminal use of weapons, whether it is a firearm, knife, bat, hammer, hands, etc. is a statement of fact.  Criminals will use whatever means they have at their disposal to gain whatever advantage they can over their victim to gain whatever they want.  That’s the “sane” criminal – the criminal with a specific goal in mind for material gain.

The insane criminal, like those who are responsible for the horrific mass-murders in schools and shopping malls, really do not care about laws.  Their goal is to rack up a high body count before they’re stopped or killed so that somehow they will have their name in a record book.

Now I realize that the above is an over simplification of classes of criminals in our society, but bear with me.

In both cases, the restriction of a person’s ability to defend themselves with a firearm puts that person at risk for either one of these criminal groups.  It doesn’t matter if the person is in public or in their home, the safety of the individual is a personal responsibility.  It is not the responsibility of law enforcement, and this has been adjudicated in both State and Federal courts!

This is nowhere more evident than the city of Chicago. Guns are banned, and yet the incidence of violent crime (gun and otherwise) being inflicted upon the disarmed populace is horrific. The police are not able or not willing (and definitely not obligated) to protect the neighborhoods from criminal violence and activity. People cannot legally defend themselves or their neighborhoods with firearms. Criminals now rule Chicago, and I’m not talking about the ones in City Hall.

Politicians and the elected “leaders” do not go after the criminals with weapons – that’s too hard and too dangerous.  Besides, the murders of people (usually the poor & defenseless in these crime-ridden cities) do not have the attention of the politicians because it’s too embarrassing to admit that there is no control of the criminal element in their city.  Instead, they jump on high-profile mass-murders like Sandy Hook and Virginia Tech to get their faces in front of their constituents so they can appear strong and leader-like.  And the media is their willing accomplice.

What really bugs me is that anytime some psycho goes on a rampage, the law-abiding citizens are held responsible and are punished by the passing of more rules, regulations, and restrictions.  The inevitable result is that now more and more people are now subject to that same violence.  And that means that the percentage of my being a victim of a violent crime goes up.  Perhaps now you understand why I have such an aversion to increased gun control banning legislation. The safety of my family and of myself is being compromised.

This, I cannot stand.

I am writing my Washington Congresscritters every week, and will start writing to the DNC stating my objections to the positions taken by my duly elected representatives which are against not only my personal concerns, but in violation of their oaths to uphold the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.

I invite you to do the same.

UPDATE:  April 14, 2013: is an online resource for law enforcement officers, and recently surveyed 15,000+ officers concerning gun control.  Here are the results (full link is here):

  1. Virtually all respondents (95 percent) say that a federal ban on manufacture and sale of ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds would not reduce violent crime.
  2. The majority of respondents — 71 percent — say a federal ban on the manufacture and sale of some semi-automatics would have no effect on reducing violent crime. However, more than 20 percent say any ban would actually have a negative effect on reducing violent crime. Just over 7 percent took the opposite stance, saying they believe a ban would have a moderate to significant effect.
  3. About 85 percent of officers say the passage of the White House’s currently proposed legislation would have a zero or negative effect on their safety, with just over 10 percent saying it would have a moderate or significantly positive effect.
  4. Seventy percent of respondents say they have a favorable or very favorable opinion of some law enforcement leaders’ public statements that they would not enforce more restrictive gun laws in their jurisdictions. Similarly, more than 61 percent said they would refuse to enforce such laws if they themselves were Chief or Sheriff.
  5. More than 28 percent of officers say having more permissive concealed carry policies for civilians would help most in preventing large scale shootings in public, followed by more aggressive institutionalization for mentally ill persons (about 19 percent) and more armed guards/paid security personnel (about 15 percent).
  6. The overwhelming majority (almost 90 percent) of officers believe that casualties would be decreased if armed citizens were present at the onset of an active-shooter incident.
  7. More than 80 percent of respondents support arming school teachers and administrators who willingly volunteer to train with firearms and carry one in the course of the job.
  8. More than four in five respondents (81 percent) say that gun-buyback programs are ineffective in reducing gun violence.
  9. More than half of respondents feel that increased punishment for obviously illegal gun sales could have a positive impact on reducing gun violence.
  10. When asked whether citizens should be required to complete a safety training class before being allowed to buy a gun, about 43 percent of officers say it should not be required. About 42 percent say it should be required for all weapons, with the remainder favoring training classes for certain weapons.
  11. While some officers say gun violence in the United States stems from violent movies and video games (14 percent), early release and short sentencing for violent offenders (14 percent) and poor identification/treatments of mentally-ill individuals (10 percent), the majority (38 percent) blame a decline in parenting and family values.

Political Ignorance

While I shouldn’t be surprised at the lack of quality & expertise of our elected leaders, I am reminded again and again almost on a daily basis.  The lack of knowledge of the history and laws of this country  in deciding actions upon the issues placed before the politicians is stunning.  What is worse, the politicians make decisions, policies, and laws that do not uphold the laws and their oaths to the Constitution and the United States.  The politicians are more concerned with gaining political power, and this is a cause of alarm for my wife and myself.  Let’s take the following examples:

Illegal Immigration:

Illegal immigration is now a political topic of epic proportions.  Both political parties are promising to address it with new proposals to mainstream the illegal immigrants into the United States, and stating that such proposals will fix the broken immigration system of laws.  To which I can sum up in one single succinct word:

Now before anyone starts coming after me for being a heartless, selfish bastard, let me make one thing perfectly clear – I fully understand the drive and ambition of the illegal immigrants to flee their native countries to come to the United States for a better life.  Opportunities for advancement in their respective homelands are often limited, and would otherwise relegate them to servitude and poverty.  However, they have do choices – stay in their own country & make do, work to make their own country better, or come to this country legally,  Somehow, illegally immigrating to another country and constantly looking over one’s shoulder does not sound like a life that I would want.

With that being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the current immigration laws. Rather, the problem is two-fold:

  • The border of the United States is not secure, which means there are multiple ways for people to enter into this country illegally. And they do – in droves.
  • There is inconsistent enforcement of the laws once an illegal immigrant is found, and penalties to employers to use illegal immigrants are little more than slaps on the wrist.

These deficiencies have now made a problem so overwhelming it cannot be resolved by law enforcement alone.  So now the politicians must get involved to solve yet another problem in crisis mode that should have been taken care of years ago.

The number of illegal immigrants is estimated to be somewhere between 11 and 18 million people. That is a huge voting block, which is why both political parties are falling over each other to propose their version of immigration reform which will probably include a so-called “pathway to citizenship.”  To me, this sounds like the politicians selling out the People of the United States to advance their own political power.

The sad part of it is, nothing these clowns propose or enact will resolve the problems of a porous border and undermanned border security & enforcement.  If anything, their proposals will only encourage illegal immigration.

Our Second Amendment Rights

The United States Supreme Court in the District of Columbia v. Heller decision struck down the District of Columbia’s gun ban in June 2008.  This decision reaffirmed that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right of all Americans to “keep and bear arms” and is not limited to the militia and National Guard. The opinion continues “The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.”

And yet this decision to uphold one of the Bill of Rights of the Constitution of the United States is still under attack by the gun banning crowd.  Fiction is part of their arguments to deny law abiding citizens their Constitutional Rights.  For instance:

Speaking at a Denver Post forum on gun control Tuesday, [Representative Diana] DeGette pushed for legislation that would prohibit the future sale of ammunition-loading devices that hold more than 10 bullets. Noting that Colorado had recently passed a ban on magazines capable of holding more than 15 rounds, DeGette suggested existing devices that are grandfathered into the laws would lose functionality after being used.

“I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high-capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available,” she said, according to the Denver Post.

Obviously, Representative DeGette hasn’t a clue as to what she is talking about as gun magazines can be reloaded with ammunition, but that will not prevent her from weighing in on and voting on legislation to ban guns.

In contrast, some facts from the Wall Street Journal:

Much of the national discussion in the wake of the Newtown schoolhouse shootings has focused on limiting gun ownership by high-risk people. But to truly address the many homicides committed in America’s cities, lawmakers also need to ensure there are real consequences for illegally carrying a gun on the street. Regardless of whether or not the gun was lawfully obtained—carrying one illegally is a more serious offense than possession, since it is directly linked with high murder rates.

In 2012, 506 people were murdered in Chicago. According to an analysis of homicide data by the University of Chicago Crime Lab, nearly 86% of those killings were committed with a firearm, and more than three-fourths occurred outdoors, virtually all with illegally carried guns. Across the country in 2010, guns were used in 11,078 homicides—and illegally carried guns were a central element in most of the killings.

Did you understand the above?  It’s not the people obeying the laws that cause the majority of the problems – it’s the criminals!  In other words, criminals are breaking existing laws, and will most likely break any new ones that Congress or their respective State and Local politicians pass.

But the laws that the politicians pass are used to garner publicity for themselves, increasing their stature and chances for re-election.  Sandy Hook has been used by shameful politicians to advance gun banning legislation that would have not prevented the tragedy in the first place.  And yet the media and politicians obsesses over restricting weapons from law-abiding citizens who use them for recreation, hunting, and yes, self-defense.

From Thomas Sowell:

The defensive use of guns is usually either not discussed at all in the media or else is depicted as if it means bullets flying in all directions, like the gunfight at the OK Corral. But most defensive uses of guns do not involve actually pulling the trigger.

If someone comes at you with a knife and you point a gun at him, he is very unlikely to keep coming, and far more likely to head in the other direction, perhaps in some haste, if he has a brain in his head. Only if he is an idiot are you likely to have to pull the trigger. And if he is an idiot with a knife coming after you, you had better have a trigger to pull.

Surveys of American gun owners have found that 4 to 6 percent reported using a gun in self-defense within the previous five years. That is not a very high percentage but, in a country with 300 million people, that works out to hundreds of thousands of defensive uses of guns per year.

Yet we almost never hear about these hundreds of thousands of defensive uses of guns from the media, which will report the killing of a dozen people endlessly around the clock.

The murder of a dozen innocent people is unquestionably a human tragedy. But that is no excuse for reacting blindly by preventing hundreds of thousands of other people from defending themselves against meeting the same fate.

Something that I heard the other day rings oh so true:

Gun Control is not Crime Control.

But that simple fact will not stop the politicians from grandstanding & proclaiming that they are “doing something” to prevent another Sandy Hook while in reality, they are doing nothing constructive.

Civics Lesson

What is the United States?  A Democracy?  If so, then it’s rule by the mob.  We’re actually a Constitutional Representative Republic, but the lines are being blurred every day.  Here’s a video that should make it clear:

The American Form of Government

Mob rule brings about unbelievable occurrences. Guys are elected with little or no experience or preparation for the task at hand. Certainly the election of Barack Obama is a prime example – when you consider his inexperience and background compared to that of his opponent.

Democracy is leading to the decline of our once great country – as more and more takers vote for more and more politicians who promise more and more free stuff.

The history of the fall of Rome should be an example of what is in store for the United States if the government stays on the current path and the People do nothing to change the course of the country.

A Politician’s Real Job (from 2005)

In case any of you didn’t know, a typical politician’s primary job is not to serve the people who elected him. His primary job is to get himself (or herself) elected or re-elected. Second is to reward all those contributors that gave $$ to help him get elected. Third is to get as many perks & benefits as he can while he is in office. Last on the list is the common person like you & I.

And some wonder why Congress and the politicians constantly rate so low on the trust scale.  After all:

  • If you lie to the Politicians in Congress, it’s a crime called Perjury.
  • If the Politicians in Congress lie to you, it’s called Politics.

Any questions?
